The Turkish Biochemical Society was founded in 1975 in Ankara and aims
to unite all biochemists and molecular biologists under the same
umbrella. Over the years it has flourished to become one of the leading
national societies in Turkey, with more than 2000 members and official
branches in three major cities: Istanbul, Izmir and Adana. The Society
has been a member of FEBS and IUBMB since 1978. More recent memberships
include IFCC (International Federation of Clinical Chemistry, 1997),
FESCC (Federation of European Societies for Clinical Chemists, 1997)
and
BCLF (Balkan Clinical Laboratory Federation, 1998). TBS has organized
more than twenteen national and international scientific meetings, some
with 800-1000 participants. The National Congresses held at 18th-month
intervals and are open to international participation including invited
speakers. In addition, TBS organizes educational meetings for
udergraduate and graduate educators in science and medical faculties
(three of such meetings were performed together with the IUBMB
educational Committee at years 1989, 1992 and 1998) and also several
educational meetings on selected topics in clinical biochemistry and
laboratory standardization. In recent years it has assigned a leading
role in laboratory accreditation and certification. The
Turkish Biochemical Journal, published by TBS on a quarterly basis,
covers research and review articles on all aspects of biochemistry and
related fields and indexed in Chemical Abstract since 1979. The Society
